The name of the game for wilderness photography is hard work, but once in a while we get a gift. On a small hike from our house Robin and I spotted a Barred Owl perched on a tree not too far into the woods. I was without my camera, but I was close enough to home to sprint back, grab the camera, put on the 400 prime on and slowly sneak back to where the Owl was spotted. When I got back to the location the Owl was still sitting there in the same place, how lucky. I boosted my ISO to 800 and fired a few handheld shots at distance and slowly drew towards the Barred Owl. I was able to get five or so sharp photographs before the Owl lifted and then descended on a mouse, prey it must have been listening for the whole time.

Nice sharing! I have great affection for birds and love to learn about different bird species especially singing birds. Do you have any idea about Barred Owl’s life style and habits? I am going to bus tours to nyc; let me know where we can find Barred Owl in New York?
ReplyDeleteHi David, I don't now a ton about the Barred Owl except for its interesting hooting call that sounds like, “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all?” It is a large Owl and a wildly good hunter. I believe it is primarily seen in the East, but now has spread to may other areas of the United States. To see one I recommend walking dirt roads as silently as possible two hours or so before sunset. They will often wake up around this time and sit still on tree branches. I hope this helps, take care.
