Great Sand Dunes National Park

I always thought that we had big sand dunes here in Northern Michigan. Was I ever wrong. When Robin and I were out west for a few weeks we decided to stop at Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. The dunes looked quite unimpressive from a distance, as we continued to get closer they didn't seem to change much. We both wondered if it was working stopping by or not. To make matters worse, the sky was completely covered with dense clouds. When we finally got very near, we realized why the size of the dunes stayed static for such a long time. It was simply because of how massive they really are. Star dune for instance is 750 feet tall from its base to its crest.

We got out of the car and walked all over the place, happy that we stopped after all. Only an hour later we were treated to the best sunset from the entire trip. A small opening on the horizon let sun rip through and light the sky ablaze. We got very lucky, but then again it goes to show that keeping your route strait and true will always win you through.
